Cove and LED Ceiling Lighting Guide

How cove and perimeter LED, backlit stretch ceilings and integrated lighting are designed in Ghana homes — colour temperature, dimming, lighting scenes, and building the LED in at frame stage rather than bolting it on.

Lighting Is Part of the Ceiling, Not an Afterthought

The difference between a flat ceiling and a ceiling that transforms a room at night is almost always the lighting — and almost always whether that lighting was designed into the ceiling or bolted onto it afterwards. Cove LED, backlit membranes and integrated downlights live inside the ceiling build. Plan them at design and frame stage and they look seamless; add them later and they look added.

Ceiling Experts Ghana designs and installs lit ceilings across Accra, building the lighting into the frame from the first drawing. See LED luminous ceilings.

The Lit Ceiling Techniques

Cove and Perimeter LED

A cove is a recessed channel — usually around a tray or the room perimeter — that hides an LED strip and washes light up and out onto the ceiling. The strip is never seen; only the glow is. This is the signature look of a POP tray ceiling and the most popular lit detail in Ghana living rooms. The cove must be sized and set out at design stage so the strip sits at the right depth and angle. See POP design ceilings.

Backlit Stretch (Luminous Ceilings)

A translucent stretch membrane lit evenly from behind reads as a glowing panel or a whole luminous ceiling. It is the most dramatic lit option — a soft, even sheet of light with no visible fittings — and it works as a feature over a dining table, a bar, a reception or a bathroom. Because stretch is moisture-proof, a backlit ceiling can even go in a humid room.

Integrated Downlights and Spots

Recessed downlights and adjustable spots set into the ceiling plane for task and accent light. Their positions are part of the ceiling drawing, not a later guess, so they fall where the furniture and circulation actually need them.

Designing the Light, Not Just Fitting It

Colour Temperature

Colour temperature is measured in kelvin (K). Warm white (around 2700–3000K) suits living rooms, bedrooms and hospitality — relaxed and inviting. Neutral to cool white (around 4000K) suits kitchens, bathrooms and work areas where you want crisp, clear light. Mixing temperatures across one open space looks unplanned; we set a deliberate temperature per zone.

Dimming and Scenes

A cove that can dim from full to a soft evening glow does far more work than a single bright setting. Where the budget allows, we wire cove, downlights and feature lighting onto separate, dimmable circuits so a room can switch between bright (cleaning, day) and low (evening, relaxing). On a stretch backlit ceiling, colour-changing (RGB) LED can shift the whole mood of the room.

Layering

A well-lit room uses layers: ambient (the cove wash), task (downlights over work zones), and accent (spots on art or a feature). Designing the ceiling to carry all three is what makes a space feel finished rather than just lit.

Build It In at Frame Stage

The single most important practical point: the lighting is set out and wired in while the ceiling frame goes up. Cove depths, strip channels, downlight positions and the driver/transformer locations are all part of the frame and first-fix. Trying to add concealed cove lighting to a finished plaster ceiling means cutting it open — which is why we plan lighting on the same drawing as the ceiling design.

Common Lit-Ceiling Questions

Will cove LED show the strip? No — a correctly sized cove hides the strip entirely and shows only the wash of light. If you can see dots, the cove was too shallow or the strip wrongly placed.

Can I have a lit ceiling in a bathroom? Yes — a backlit stretch membrane is moisture-proof, so a luminous ceiling works in a bathroom where plaster cove lighting would not.

Can the lights change colour or dim? Yes, where wired for it — dimmable and RGB colour-changing LED are both standard options when planned at design stage.
