POP Ceiling Designs
POP (plaster of Paris) ceiling designs for Ghana homes — living-room, hall and bedroom POP designs, coves, trays, curves, centre panels, perimeter cornices and integrated cove lighting. Design-by-room, indicative POP ceiling cost in ₵/sqm, and the truth about cracking in Ghana's humidity. Ceiling Experts Ghana, since 1980.
A POP ceiling is plaster of Paris cast and modelled by hand on a frame — coves, trays, curves, centre panels and perimeter cornices — to give a room design freedom no flat board can match. Ceiling Experts Ghana has designed and installed POP ceilings across Accra since 1980, framing each one to the span so the design lasts rather than cracks.
Why POP Is Ghana’s Most-Wanted Ceiling
POP is the most popular residential ceiling in Ghana because it is the only system that lets a ceiling be designed rather than just fitted — the cove, the tray, the curve, the centre panel and the cove light are all worked into the plaster on site. The trade-off is that POP is a craft: its quality lives in the frame, the span and the curing, not in a product code. Done right it carries a high-end look for decades; done in a hurry on an under-built frame it cracks. We treat the frame as the job.
Choosing a POP Design by Room
The most common regret is choosing a POP design from a photo and ignoring the room it has to live in — a heavy coved tray in a low bedroom, or a flat single cove lost in a double-height hall. POP is a room decision: large living rooms and halls carry a coved or trayed perimeter with a centre panel and cove lighting; bedrooms suit a simpler cove or single tray; entrances and stairwells take a centre rose or a curved feature. We design to the room’s size, height and light first.
POP Designs We Install in Accra
Living-Room & Hall POP Designs
Coved or trayed perimeters with a centre panel and integrated cove lighting — the signature high-end Ghana living-room ceiling, sized to carry the room and its light.
Bedroom & Master-Suite POP
A simpler cove, a single recessed tray, or a soft curve over the bed — POP design freedom kept proportionate to a quieter, lower room.
Coves, Trays & Curves
The core POP vocabulary: perimeter coves that hide LED strips, recessed trays that step the ceiling, and curved or wave forms that soften a square room.
Centre Panels & Perimeter Cornices
A modelled centre panel (often around the main light or rose) framed by a perimeter cornice — the classic POP composition that defines a formal room.
Integrated Cove Lighting
Cove channels formed into the POP to carry concealed LED strips, so the light is part of the ceiling rather than bolted on afterwards.
POP vs Gypsum vs PVC for the Look You Want
| System | Best for | Look | Humidity | Indicative cost (₵) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| POP (plaster) | Living rooms, halls, master suites | Coves, trays, curves, centre panels | Keep to dry rooms | ~100–250 /sqm · room 3,000–5,000 · hall 7,500–10,000 |
| Gypsum / drywall | Bedrooms, plain modern flats | Clean flat, simple cove | Dry rooms | labour ~35 /sqm + board 135–200/sheet |
| PVC / stretch | Bathrooms, kitchens, fast jobs | Matt/gloss panel | Moisture-proof | from ~40 /sqm |

How We Design & Install a POP Ceiling
- Design consultation & measure — POP design agreed to the room (cove, tray, curve, centre panel, cornice); lighting positions set; room and height measured.
- Frame & set-out to the span — metal or timber frame fixed and braced to the span; datum levels marked against the slab.
- Board, cast & model the POP — plaster cast and worked on the frame; coves, trays, curves, centre panels and cornices modelled by hand; cove lighting channels formed in.
- Cure, finish, snag & handover — POP cured properly, finished, decorated, snagged against the agreed design, handed over clean.
Materials & Real Standards
- POP / plaster of Paris is a craft finish — there is no product standard for it. Quality comes from correct framing, span and curing, not from a certificate; we frame and cure to the room rather than cite a code that does not exist for plaster.
- Where a gypsum/drywall board backing is genuinely used behind or beside the POP, that board is specified to ASTM C1396 / EN 520 (with Type X fire-rated board only where a real fire requirement applies).
- We do not attach tile, steel or generic ISO ratings to a POP ceiling — they do not describe plaster work, and we will not invent a standard or a warranty tier for it.
What Affects the Cost
- The design complexity — a flat single cove costs less than a multi-step coved/trayed/curved ceiling with a centre panel
- Room area (sqm), ceiling height, and access
- Integrated cove/LED lighting and the number of light positions
- Surface preparation and any old-ceiling removal
Indicative market ranges are about GH₵100–250/sqm, GH₵3,000–5,000 for a single room, and GH₵7,500–10,000 for a large living room or hall — indicative only. Every firm quote follows a free site measure; no fixed rate is given before the room is seen.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a POP ceiling cost in Ghana? Indicative ranges: POP ~GH₵100–250/sqm, a single room ~GH₵3,000–5,000, a large living room or hall ~GH₵7,500–10,000. These are indicative — the firm quote follows a free site measure, since it depends on the design, area, height and lighting.
Does a POP ceiling crack in Ghana’s humidity? Not from humidity alone — cracking comes from an under-built frame, rushed curing, or a roof leak above. We frame to the span, let the POP cure, and keep it out of genuinely wet rooms where PVC or stretch belongs.
POP or gypsum board — what is the difference? POP is a craft finish cast and modelled by hand on a frame, with full design freedom (coves, curves, centre panels). Gypsum board is a flat factory panel screwed to a frame — faster and cleaner for a plain modern flat. POP is chosen when the design is the point.
What POP designs work best in a living room or hall? A coved or trayed perimeter with a centre panel and integrated cove lighting, since the room is large enough to carry both the design and the light. Bedrooms suit a simpler cove or a single tray.
